Semester Wrap Up with a Gig:

This semesters jazz classes are coming to a close with a "gig" on Thursday night, May 20th, 8:00 pm, at the Stomping Grounds Coffee House in Ames.  The gig will last approximately 60 -75 minutes as students play through 6-7 different songs, demonstrating some of the music theory and new skills, as it relates to jazz, that they have learned through the semester.  This would be a great place to have a student that may be interested in improving their jazz playing abilities come and get a taste of what is going on.  This is a very good group of students and should be very enjoyable to listen to.

Start of Summer Jazz Class Sessions:

1.) Jump Start your jazz band - Do you have some students that would like to get a head start on some music for next year?  We will be conducting a summer session that will be made up of 4 classes.  My goal in this session is to take 1 or 2 songs that you will likely be playing next year and work with your students on soloing ideas, theme and development, jazz theory and how to better play with in the jazz style over these songs.  This will definitely give your students some music to practice on during the summer and will help put them in a better position during the next school year.  Each of the four sessions will last 1 hour and 15 minutes, and include a play along c.d. of the solo section of your particular music, so that the students will have it and can practice on their own (I will create the play along).  The session will combine theory, listening, playing and homework assignments.    Class size: 4-6 students.  Time: Flexible based on the groups schedule. Cost: $25 per session/student. Drumers and Rhythm section players are encouraged to take this class even if they do not normally solo.

2.) Student Jazz Group - Students can put their own group together or will be put with other students and work on playing 2 standards during a four class term.  We will focus on jazz theory, soloing ideas, scale choices and playing correctly over the changes.  Class size: 4-6 students.  Time: Flexible based on the groups schedule, 1 hr and 15 min classes. Cost: $25 per session/student.

3.) Small Group - This is designed for either 2 or 3 students, no more.  We will work on either a specific area that the students would like to improve on or focus on a particular jazz style: Blues, Standards, Rhythm Changes, Ballads, Up Tempo Tunes, Modal or Cool Jazz.  Four Classes, 50 minutes, $20 per student.

I have a drum set and both guitar and bass amps for the students to use.  Sessions are open to all instruments and all players.  There will be some playing opportunities during the summer that these students can participate in if they desire that are outside of class.

Sessions will start in early June and should be over by mid to late July.  All sessions are four weeks long.

Hope the end of the semester is going smooth for you.  Please call me with any questions.

Keep Swinging!!!

Thanks
